The Exhibition
Visitors have the opportunity to unfold the “thread” of the exhibition through a series of exhibits of different themes which present the symbiosis of man with the natural environment of Mt Psiloritis. The exhibits present the important geological features and the unique biodiversity of Mt Psiloritis in combination with the numerous human activities that unfold around them.
An important part of the exhibition is dedicated to the cave “Idaion Andron” and the myths associated with it such as the “horn of Amalthea”, while another section is dedicated to the rich livestock of the area, emphasizing in its culture. The visitors have the opportunity to learn about the “mitata”, the traditional buildings that play the role of the shepherd’s house on the mountain and host important moments of his daily life such as cheese making, feasts with traditional dances and folk music and in general the life of the shepherd and of his family. Special mention is made of the “koura” (the process of cutting of the hair of the herd), “the feast of the lambs” as it is called, as well as the rest of the wool path afterwards, where with the help of the loom it is transformed into a garment for man.
The exhibition presents the course of livestock farming over the years, highlighting possible new opportunities and possibilities for its development. At the same time, the exhibition includes tributes to the biodiversity of Mt Psiloritis, presenting the most important species of flora and fauna, and especially those that are endemic to the area of Mt Psiloritis or Crete.
