Psiloritis Geopark<\/strong> was founded in 2001 as a Natural Park by\u200b A.K.O.M.M. – Psiloritis<\/a> with the scientific support of the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete<\/a>. Due to its rich geodiversity<\/strong>, beautiful landscape and unquestionable history and tradition,\u00a0Psiloritis Natural Park<\/strong> has been part of the European Geoparks Network<\/a> since its establishment and after some time of the Global Geoparks Network<\/a>, thus achieving global recognition of this place. Now, the geoparks of the Global Geoparks Network have been included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks program<\/a> and their basic operating rules and characteristics are determined through decisions and relevant directives of UNESCO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Natural Park of Psiloritis<\/strong> is home to numerous species of rocks and most of the endemic species of flora and fauna of Crete, having formed an inseparable relationship with the culture and people who have lived through the centuries on Mt Psiloritis. The geology and geographical location of the area shaped both its history and its people. Geomorphological landscapes and archeological or historical monuments are scattered throughout the Natural Park. Unique rocks<\/strong>, fossils<\/strong>, caves<\/strong>, gorges<\/strong> and rock faults, compose the history of nature and man on Mt Psiloritis.<\/p>\n The Natural Park of Psiloritis, in collaboration with the Municipalities and other relevant organizations of the area, has developed the appropriate infrastructure to provide, both to its guests and to its permanent residents a quality life in a standard non-urban environment. Today, the Natural Park of Psiloritis actively participates in the global efforts for the protection and promotion of the environment, the natural and cultural heritage, as well as the sustainable local development<\/strong> through geotourism<\/strong> and other, specialized forms of tourism.<\/p>\n
